My Child’s Mini Garden

This is an easy-peasy garden you can make anywhere – on a balcony, near a window sill or even on a tabletop indoors.

This anywhere garden is so easy to care for, it makes a great holiday project for parents to do with their kids. The plants practically look after themselves.

The garden can be set up with hardy, low maintenance plants like succulents and the alien-looking air plants or Tillandsia, which looks like spiders from outer space.

Bound to thrill the kids, these plants can live without soil, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain, through their leaves. In the wild, their roots cling to trees and rocks, but at home, you can hang the pots overhead with wire or nylon fishing or mount them (using clear waterproof glue) on rocks, seashells, driftwoods or even mirrors. In low humidity areas, a thorough daily misting will keep your air plants happy. Or give them a five-minute dip in a cup of water around twice a week.

You can also include various cacti which need indirect sunlight and little water. Pink and white fittonias, which prefer partial shade and need moderate water can be a good choice for your mini garden.

So kids – get going! And remember while you’re enjoying yourself and learning things, that you’re also doing your small but important bit to help halt global warming. Bravo!
